Behind the Scenes of our Resort 25 shoot with Gorkey.
Meet Gorkey, our RE25 photographer
I studied marketing and worked in advertising for a while. Before that when I was in school in Pune Maharashtra, I saw this Bollywood movieWake up Sidwhere the protagonist is a photographer and I came out of that movie thinkingI want to be that guy.I loved and still love photography because it allows me to meet very interesting people, and as an introverted person it's my way of expressing things. That's what I love about it the most.
Who are your most important artistic inspirations?
Everyday working class people are my biggest inspiration. Seemingly ordinary men and women and their everyday lives inspire me, because they are never ever what they seem.
In terms of creativity, we would love to know about your process - are there any books, music, film you would site as major inspiration?
I was never a reader or a movie buff while growing up. I recently started reading a lot and that became a part of my creative process in ways I never thought it would. The creativity comes from what I see in my life or what I have seen when I was young as my dad was in the army and we traveled in lived in different parts of India all throughout my childhood those memories, recollection and I try to find a human angle to everything I approach and find interesting stories that inspire me and that I feel need to be documented. This research and finding new things becomes a very big part of my creative process. I have never formally studied photography or filmmaking so I don't have people whose work I look up to that inspire me. Everyday mundane things inspire me the most.
"The shared history of movies Gem Cinema holds, from the project room to the popcorn machine is what compelled me to always one day shoot in Gem cinema."
What did you find compelling about shooting at the Gem Cinema?
Just the history of the place and how after so many years when single screen theaters in India are so few, Gem cinema still works and holds that old beauty of it. Watching movies used to be a family and friends experience that people used to save money and do together. The shared history of movies Gem Cinema holds, from the project room to the popcorn machine is what compelled me to always one day shoot in Gem cinema.
Can you describe the atmosphere and vibe of the day?
I have a video of everyone dancing after the shoot ended on the stage of the cinema and I see it sometimes just to remember how easy and fun the shoot was. It's always beautiful to work with people who enjoy doing what they do.
And finally... Do you have any words or a slogan that you live by?Oh my favorites in this quote from Bojack Horseman: "It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day — that’s the hard part."
